DJO2 Collide Remix Exclusive Premiere at CON!
If you're attending CON ( http://convergence-con.org/ ) this weekend, be sure to join me in the mainstage ballroom at midnite Friday. During my (very Wonder Women themed) DJ set, I will debut my latest, and possibly best, remix work: "Chaotic (Oxygenated)", one of two remixes I will have on Collide's forthcoming "Bent and Broken".

Although Collide is still putting the finishing touches on this release ( full details: http://www.collide.net/news/ ), they have graciously granted me permission to give CON-goers an official and exclusive preview at the height of our all-night dance party.

This will be the first public performance of "Chaotic (Oxygenated)", and quite probably your only chance to hear it until the full album is released later this year.

    ------

And as long as you're at CON…

Noise and I are proud to present an *extended* version of our annual Saturday night Sci-Fi/Fantasy Music Hour -- now 50% longer than a standard Earth hour!! Arrive at mainstage early (~10:30) so you don't miss a minute of geek-tastic music, videos, and assorted oddities to kick off yet another all-night dance party.

Best. Party. Ever. (Taj Mahpolitan Playlist)
Taj Mahpolitan was absolutely incredible. I am consistently amazed by the talents of our friends. Thought Thieves played 2 great sets, all the DJs were at the top of their game, and the surprise performance in the wee hours by That 1 Guy and Savage Aural Hotbed was the icing on our cake. Thanks to everyone who helped put together the (no exaggeration) best party ever.

My musical contribution was as follows:

    Spice Train - Thomas Dolby
Spectrum (Oxidized) - Florence + The Machine
    Chak Glass - Imran Khan

    Dream Castle
    http://www.indabamusic.com/asset/show/1612954

A while back I said I was going to take a little break from remixing to write some original music. "Dream Castle" is the first fruit.

For D's birthday I wanted to do a piece inspired by one of her favorite paintings. Since BT already claimed "Flaming June", I picked Maxfield Parrish's "Dream Castle in the Sky".

The best way to enjoy this piece is with a pair of headphones, standing in front of the massive (10' x 6') canvas at our own Minneapolis Institute of Arts (3rd floor near the period rooms).

At the very least, you should have this (admittedly weak) imitation on your screen when you listen: http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/full.php?ID=160

    Happy Birthday to Me...
    ... and Hard Mondays!

On Monday 11/21, the crew at my old stomping ground has graciously asked me to come back and do a guest set in honor of the 15th anniversary of Hard Mondays and the (redacted) anniversary of my birth! Show up early because I'll be wrapping up my set around midnight in order to make it worth having a designated driver.

    $2 bottles of Rolling Rock
    and of course no cover!!

If you've got 5 spare minutes, please give my latest remix a listen and a vote if you feel it's deserving.

    on the website...

or through some Flash-ey Widget-ey thing...

As a mixing/mastering engineer and/or a remixer (i.e. mostly working on other people's music), you have to listen to the same song over and over and over for hours at a time. You can't avoid getting it stuck in your head long after you've put it away for the day. It's always nice when you like what you're internal DJ is playing.

This track, "Army of Love" by an Estonian singer named Kerli, is a fun song to have stuck in your head. When I was working on it, I checked out some of her other stuff. In addition to dance-y pop music, she also has an edgier side. Kind of reminds me of The Birthday Massacre. Definitely worth your time to check her out.

    BT Remix!
    The Emergency (Oxygenated)

A couple months ago, trimiddew tipped me off to a remix contest for Amanda Palmer. This was hosted on a site called Indaba Music of which I was previously unaware.

For an aspiring musician/remixer like yours truly, this site is a wonderful and dangerous thing. There are dozens of remix contests (among other opportunities). I could never leave the office/studio again - damn my day job to hell!

Many of you have heard my dabblings in remixing over the past couple years, and some of you may remember that I landed the 3rd track on a CD single for The Secret Meeting!

The above BT track is easily the best thing I've done so far. The original song is beautiful, and I had a lot of fun working with it. Give it a listen and let me know what you think.

Acropolis Now - NYE 2010 Playlist (finally recovered edition)
Consensus seems to be that this was the best party we've yet produced. Even though we never actually say "costume party" I am continually amazed by the level of participation. The 2 rooms were a sea of togas, el-wire, deities, and garage tech, all illuminated by black lights and lasers. Every DJ did the best work of their lives. And somewhere close to 300 people participated in the insanity.

My lead-in to Savage Aural Hotbed's stellar performance...

rumble (djo2 edit) - nigel godrich
derezzed (djo2 xt) - daft punk
    attention whore (djo2 edit) - deadmau5
me and myself (wolfgang gartner djo2 edit) - bendj
you are my diamond (xt) - tiesto
somebody to love (moonbootica djo2 re-edit) - boogie pimps
    temple of dreams - messiah
    everything (cosmic gate) - tiesto
faster kill pussycat (roman hunter) - paul oakenfold
not in love (djo2 xt) - crystal castles
fast driving (original) - dallas superstars
i like that - richard vission & static revenger

    Convergence 2010-07-01 thru -04
Holy crap what a weekend! Running on adrenaline, averaging 4 hours of sleep each "night", drinking staggering amounts of vodka and sweating it all out on the dance floor. Speaking of which, every one of the DJs had the best sets of their lives -- taking full advantage of the record crowds to keep Main Stage going until dawn every single night.

In addition to our annual, patented Strobe-Free Sci-Fi/Fantasy Music Hour, djnoise asked me to do a "(very loosely themed) retro" set on Friday this year. Naturally I agreed and here is the result...

    wild boys - duran duran
let's dance (djo2 edit) - rabbit in the moon
erotic city (djo2 edit) - berlin
white horse (djo2 edit) - laidback
sos - message in the bottle (hi-tack djo2 edit) - filterfunk
call on me (eric prydz vs retarded funk) - eric prydz
bring the noise (sfaction edit) - public enemy
one night in bangkok (club djo2 edit) - vinylshakerz
dj (djo2 edit) - david bowie
somebody to love (moonbootica djo2 re-edit) - boogie pimps
bizarre love triangle (crystal method's csii) - new order
new year's day (ferry corsten extended vocal djo2 edit) - u2
send me an angel (remix djo2 edit) - paul oakenfold
heat of the moment (club djo2 edit) - dj manian
smells like teen spirit (warp brothers) - nirvana
heaven is a place on earth (pascal 12" djo2 edit) - soda club

Later, as the eastern sky began to lighten (I assume, since I was nowhere near a window), it was open-decks-slash-tag-team. Just as it seemed the room was clearing out and we'd call an end to the night, the last room parties shut down and we got a sudden surge of diehard revelers. For the first time in many years, djnoise and I went head to head. My memory isn't clear, but the tracks I recall contributing...

don't call me baby (original - edit) - madison avenue
move in my direction - bananarama
crying at the discotheque (illicit) - alcazar
    poker face - lady gaga
    barbie girl (radio) - aqua
    1999 - adeva

On Saturday night, despite equipment failure both before and during, the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Hour culminated in a conga line of hundreds of people led by a robot. My (all video) selections included in no particular order...

    8-bit trip - rymdreglage
do you want to date my avatar - felicia day
back door lover - du jour
go speed racer go (djo2 edit) - ali dee and the deekompressors
big girl (you are beautiful) - mika
    intergalactic - beastie boys
she blinded me with science - thomas dolby

It'll be a long year to wait until CON 2011.

    Goth Prom 17-may-2010
I can't possibly extend sufficient gratitude to nitrogen and noise as well as the Goth Prom Committee for having me DJ last night. As always, Goth Prom was packed, and everyone I talked to had a great evening!

I tried to make my set reflect the theme of the night; notes on the corresponding sin are listed with the tracks...

    tahat (djo2 edit) - squaremeter
un human mysteriouse (dimitri v. madonna) - djo2 *pride*
    temptation - project pitchfork *lust*
    fame - david bowie *pride*
games without frontiers (djo2 rmx) - peter gabriel *wrath*
    crystalline green - goldfrapp *sloth*
    marrakech - hybrid
    kiss king - pigface
everything counts - depeche mode *greed*
    obsession - animotion - *lust*
bizarre love triangle - new order *envy*
don't you want me - the human league *pride*
    erotic city - berlin *lust*
hungry like the wolf - duran duran *gluttony*

    (Tokyo 2020 NYE) "I'm a dumbass" edition...
... for not posting the playlist from one of the most fun sets I've done (at one of the most fun parties we've ever thrown).

This was a bit of an experiment for me since I'm all kinds of old-school -- mostly DJ-ing from CDs. This was the first set I've done that was all PC DJ and all video. Without a ton of experience on this particular hardware/software, I had backup audio CDs loaded into the decks in case I crashed and burned.

Getting ready for the night was a TON of work because I edited the audio and/or video for almost every track. (I've included notes on the versions and edits for each track.) Putting in the time and pushing my own envenlope was completely worth it. This was definitely one of my top 5 nights ever, and I can't thank the party crew enough (especially trimiddew and djnoise) for creating the environment.

    Light Years - Kylie Minogue
    - audio - unedited album version
    - video - edited live concert footage

Faster Kill Pussycat - Paul Oakenfold (w/ the late Brittany Murphy)

Shameless Self-Promotion (a.k.a. Vote for ME!)
After taking most of the last year off, working on some writing and remixing, and doing a couple gigs (including the awesome Tokyo 2020 NYE party!!), I've decided it's time I start to do some more DJ-ing again.

Local promoters Sound in Motion (who bring all the big touring DJs to Minneapolis/St. Paul) are having a contest for an opening slot at the upcoming Paul van Dyk or Benny Benassi shows. I've put my name on the list, and with a little help from my friends (that's you guys!) just might get a shot at it.

Round 1 is an online vote. Please go to the Sound in Motion website and vote for me! Then if you want to, repost, publish to your Facebook page, Twitter, or pass this on to other people I know (or don't know) to vote for me as well, I will be forever in your debt.

Round 2 (if I make it to the finals) will be a 30-minute set at The Lounge in downtown Minneapolis where I'll need as much crowd support as possible, so I promise to do the best set of my life. Stay tuned!

Once again, Sound in Motion and vote for "DJ O2".

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

DJO2 Back in the Booth @ Chamber - TONIGHT!
The crew at Chamber has graciously asked me to do a guest set tonight!

    Details:
    18+, 21 to drink
    Doors at 9
    9 - 10, FREE admission, $5 after 10
(Also, the best priced drinks in downtown!)

I'll go on 11-ish for at least an hour (fair warning if you want to hear everyone but me)

Personal Note: One of the main reasons for my retirement from Hard Mondays was to spend more time writing instead of only playing other people's music. Tonight will be my first public venue (CON-goers got a sneak peak) to show off the initial results of that effort, a synth-heavy instrumental inspired by an old Police tune. Come down and let me know what you think, good or bad.

    See you on the floor,
    m!

The most idiotic thing I read about today...
... is how our puritanical roots have people tying their "logic" in knots trying to figure out ways to keep people who love each other from getting married.

    An excerpt from this piece:

A lawyer for the transgendered plaintiff in the Littleton case noted the absurdity of the country’s gender laws as they pertain to marriage: “Taking this situation to its logical conclusion, Mrs. Littleton, while in San Antonio, Tex., is a male and has a void marriage; as she travels to Houston, Tex., and enters federal property, she is female and a widow; upon traveling to Kentucky she is female and a widow; but, upon entering Ohio, she is once again male and prohibited from marriage; entering Connecticut, she is again female and may marry; if her travel takes her north to Vermont, she is male and may marry a female; if instead she travels south to New Jersey, she may marry a male.”
